Architecture and lead engineering for Yahoo's premium video app, on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
The brief
Yahoo Screen was Yahoo's home for premium video. It needed to play reliably, recover gracefully from errors, and let people keep browsing while they watched on the TV.
What we built
- Developed and helped architect the Yahoo Screen iOS app
- Helped build the Apple TV version of Screen, before tvOS existed
- Built AirPlay with a full browse-as-you-watch experience
- Added push notifications and deep linking
- Optimized video playback and built error handling and failure recovery
- Led reusable core components used across most of Yahoo's mobile apps
- Worked with Yahoo's business development team to choose a DRM vendor
- Assisted the Yahoo Finance team with a major redesign
